1989 - 1990 Conversation Paintings

In 1989 Bill, and his wife Pat, moved to a top floor flat in Little Venice, West London. It had far reaching views from both sides of the flat, overlooked the canal and was chosen primarily for its superb natural light. The new home precipitated a burst of activity from Bill who started his first related cycle of paintings for many years. These have been retrospectively called the "Conversation Paintings" after the traditional genre paintings which depicted group portraits in an informal interior.  The flat in Little Venice is the setting for all of these works and all the works show Bill and Pat either alone or with close friends.

These works would acquire greater significance in hindsight as they give the first indications that Bill's experience of the world around was changing as a result of the undiagnosed onset of Alzheimers.
