1994 - 1996 Mask Watercolours

As Bill's faculty with painting began to fail him soon after his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease, in 1995, he experimented with a series of faces, or masks rendered in watercolour on paper. This process was not wholly new to him, he had produced a very small number of similar works in the late 1960s related to his Mummers cycle. These late masks however do relate closely to Bill's late self portraits with an overwhelming sense of melancholy and a very ephemeral adherence to the anatomical structure of the face.
